GIJ slapped with ₵25K fine as former Rector wins court case

The supposed dismissal of Dr. Wilberforce Dzisah from his position as the rector of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) by an Accra High Court has been determined to be incorrect and illegal.

As a result, the court has ordered that he be paid all of his rights for the remaining time left on his fixed term as GIJ Rector at the current bank rate of interest.

In a ruling issued on Wednesday by the High Court's Labor Division-Court 1, Judge Frank Aboagye Rockson further ordered the defendants (GIJ) to pay the plaintiff (Dr. Dzisah) an extra six months' salary at the going interest rate.

Moreover, Dr. Dzisah's 20% additional responsibility allowance as the Director of the Graduate School from 2013 to 2017 must be paid by GIJ, with interest, following Judge Rockson's ruling.

The court additionally ordered that he be compensated his unpaid responsibilities and entertainment expenses for the Rector position from July through December 2016 as well as research and book expenses for 2017.

The court additionally fined GIJ GHS25,000.00 in costs.

You may remember that Dr. Dzisah was fired by the Governing Council of GIJ in March 2018 and given the order to take a leave of absence.

In a letter dated Friday, March 23, 2018, Dr. Dzisah, whose position was scheduled to expire in August 2018, had it canceled.

In December 2017 he was told to take a leave of absence due to "procurement breaches."

The Governing Council of GIJ then made this expensive choice without consulting the GIJ Statutes or the 1992 Ghanaian Constitution, under the leadership of Prof. Kwasi Ansu-Kyeremeh, Dr. Margaret Amoakohene, and Dr. Kweku Rockson, among others.

This caused the plaintiff to file Action No. IL/0054/2018 in order to rectify the mistake and restore his reputation.
