A day after Nigerians chose Bola Ahmed Tinubu as their new president, the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria issued a press release.
MARCH 2, 2023
After the announcement of the results of the February 25 presidential election by Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the United States extends its congratulations to the people of Nigeria, President-elect Tinubu, and all political figures.
Nigerian politics and democracy are entering a new era as a result of this close election.
A unique first in Nigeria's modern political history, each of the top three contenders received the most votes in 12 states, showing the range of viewpoints that defined the campaign and the preferences of Nigeria's electorate.
We are aware that many Nigerians, as well as some of the parties, are dissatisfied with the way the procedure was carried out as well as with the flaws of the technological components that were deployed for the first time during a presidential election cycle.

Nigerians should have high expectations for their election processes and are certainly within their rights to express such concerns.
We call on INEC, together with other international observers, to make improvements in the areas that require the most focus before the March 11 gubernatorial elections.
We advise any candidate or party intending to contest the results to seek recourse through the well-established channels available for the adjudication of electoral disputes.
We demand that at this crucial period, all parties, candidates, and supporters abstain from using violent or incendiary language.
We applaud the media's and civil society's active involvement in promoting political debate on topics that matter to citizens as well as electoral rules.
We are alarmed by reports that several media professionals were assaulted during the election, and we call on the government, security agencies, political figures, and all citizens to respect the media's vital role by abstaining from any negative actions against them and holding those responsible accountable when they do.
We also applaud Nigerians for exhibiting a strong commitment to democracy, particularly the significant number of young people who are still learning about the political system.
